No, a Straußwirtschaft in Rheinhessen has nothing at all to do with the giant African birds. The name comes from a time without the Internet and social media. Back then, vintners hung a bouquet of grape leaves or ears of corn on the farm gate to signal: We are open! Come and taste our wine!
