Rheinhessen - who thinks of islands? Our region is known as the "land of 1000 hills", also called Hiwwel by the locals. Yet along the Rhine between Mainz and Bingen stretches a completely different landscape, one that is special for Germany. It is characterized by numerous islands, also called floodplains, which have been created over the centuries.
