Table of contents

Highlight sections - our favorites for connoisseurs

Anyone who explores Rheinhessen by bike experiences more than just a tour. It's the little moments along the route that stay with you: the shimmering of the vines in the afternoon sun, the smell of cider from the winery, the view over the Rhine-Hessian „Hiwwel“ (hills) that surprisingly opens up around the next bend.

Rheinhessen shows all its charm on these sections - they are stages for small discoveries, culinary breaks and great views, ideal for anyone who wants to combine enjoyment and exercise.

1st Selztal cycle path and fruit route between Ingelheim and Engelstadt

Where Rheinhessen shines
Vineyards as far as the eye can see - and in the middle of it all, a wonderfully developed cycle path that gently winds its way through the Selz Valley draws. If you're out and about here in the late afternoon, you'll get the full Rheinhessen experience: sunshine, far-reaching views, backlit vines, accompanied by the striking Westerberg with its Westerhaus Castle. The mighty Selztal dome in the small wine village of Großwinternheim is also impressive. With a few strong pedal strokes up to Engelstadt, the absolute highlight for panorama lovers is reached - the Wingerts swing, that swings you over the valley and the hills.

3rd Hiwwel Route and Rhine Cycle Route: Panorama between Ingelheim and Mainz

Orchard, view of the Rheingau and city flair
This stage of the Hiwwel route is a stage for views - and for contrasts. From the historic Imperial Palace in Ingelheim the trail initially leads above the Rhine Valley. The view sweeps across the Rhine to the hills of the Taunus and the Rheingau. The route continues through orchards to Mainz, past the striking Windeck Castle up the Mainzer Berg to the Mainz-Finthen district, where you can fill your panniers in one of the farm stores. From here, it almost rolls by itself: The green Gonsbach valley stretches like a corridor of freshness all the way to the Mainz suburbs. Small gardens to the left and right, enchanted corners and a touch of urban gardening make this section special - perfect for anyone who wants a charming combination of countryside and city.

4th wine panorama tour

Discover the wild and romantic side of Rheinhessen
Gentle hills, vineyards on the slopes of small valleys - and then unexpected rock formations: This section of the Rhine-Hessian Switzerland is very scenic and idyllic. The route runs through open vineyards and picturesque villages, past one of the typical Trulli - small roundhouses in the middle of the vines.
A special experience: the ascent to the Flonheim show quarry. A little challenging, yes - but at the top you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Rhine-Hessian hills.

5th Hiwwel-Route and Mühlen-Radweg through the Wonnegau

History meets the horizon: Spotted wall and Wingertshäuschen parade
The Wonnegau has a character all of its own, which can be felt extremely well on this section between Flörsheim-Dalsheim and Westhofen - a lot of original wine landscape, historic villages with French flair and at the same time modern wine and sparkling wine estates. Flörsheim-Dalsheim has a real gem to offer: the walk-in Medieval spot wall, one of the best-preserved fortifications in the region. From there in the direction of Westhofen, you pass a parade of lovingly maintained Wingertshäuschen. This section is a blaze of color, especially in autumn. Tip: The Gartencafe Augenwaide in Flörsheim-Dalsheim should not be missed by garden and pleasure lovers.
