The Wißberg - Eldorado for golfers, insider tip for hikers

Table of contents

If you google for excursion tips in Rheinhessen, you will find the Wissberg not find at first go. There is no lookout tower typical for Rheinhessen towering high, the signposted bike paths are not primarily made for tourists, but serve the orientation of locals. For me, this is precisely the charm of the Wißberg. Its hiking trails are little known and yet their charms are in no way inferior to other hiking routes: Fantastic views, lovingly designed resting possibilities and good signage make hiking here a great experience.

Especially beautiful is the 3.5 kilometer long panoramic trailwhich leads once around the plateau of the Wißberg and rewards with fantastic panoramic views of the seven surrounding local communities of Gau-Bickelheim, Sprendlingen, Sankt Johann, Wolfsheim, Vendersheim, Wallertheim and Gau-Weinheim. You only have to share this fantastic natural scenery with a few golfers who have long since discovered the Wißberg for themselves thanks to the challenging 18-hole championship golf course of the Golf Club Rheinhessen - Hofgut Wißberg. Not without reason, the golf course with numerous bunkers and fast greens is one of the most beautiful in all of Germany.

In addition to the golf club, the Hofgut Wißberg also includes a Hotel and the Restaurant "gramms with an appealing seasonal menu and delicious coffee and cake. For guests planning an excursion on Sundays, the restaurant has another special feature in store: with a well-filled picnic basket, you can go in search of a secluded spot amidst the vineyards and enjoy the panorama with a bottle of wine and culinary delicacies.

A particularly beautiful treat for the eyes is the view in the direction of Gau-Bickelheim. The village on the southern foothills of the Wißberg is known for its picturesque vineyards. Chapel of the Cross. It is not only a popular photo motif, but with the comfortable benches also the perfect place for a little break.

Every year in July takes place here the wine festival "Experience wine in the Wißberg" takes place, which was chosen by the Rheinhessen Touristik with the label "Rheinhessen AUSGEZEICHNET". Under the motto "Experience wine where it grows - acquire your enjoyment", the path to the Kreuzkapelle passes wine pavilions of local vintners and food stalls that make the gentle ascent extremely pleasant.

But not only the south side of the Wißberg has a lot to offer. Those who descend toward Sprendlingen can also enjoy a great hiking trail through the endless rows of vines of the Rheinhessen Toscana, as the region is called. The path down to the largest of the seven Wißberg communities runs in part parallel to the Via Vinea, a wine experience trail for young and old, which was created with much love and commitment by the winemakers of the Sprendlinger Bauern- und Winzerverein. The route features adventure stations, places to play and marvel, and places to rest and relax.

  1. It's great that the Wißberg and its communities are being made better known all around. Thank you very much. Also worth mentioning is the "arena" with the designed pillars in the Sprendling district!

    1. Dear Ursula Schnell, we think the area around the Wißberg is very beautiful and are happy to drum up support for it. We will gladly include the tip in our next post.

Travel is my passion, Rheinhessen my home. For many years I traveled the world with my backpack and camera, always in search of the most beautiful spots on earth. What I completely overlooked in the process: The most beautiful spots are often not on the other side of the globe, but right on my doorstep. So I'm off again, this time in search of the pearls of Rheinhessen.
