A unique vineyard formation on the Rhine
Formed 280 million years ago as an escarpment between the Mainz Basin and the Upper Rhine Graben, the the Red Slope between Nackenheim and Nierstein along the Rhine to the former Schwabsburg castle keep. Coming from Mainz, it is a delight at any time of year: fresh greenery and mild temperatures in spring attract hikers and cyclists out into nature. In summer, it is richly blessed by the sun and in late summer, the sea of vines transforms into a colorful potpourri of radiant autumn colors. When the play of colors fades, it is often shrouded in early morning fog and can only be guessed at in gloomy November.
Exceptional terroir in Rheinhessen
But what makes the Roter Hang so special? The ferruginous clay and sandstone, the orientation of the slope, the river that reflects the sun's rays and the mild climate in the Rhine plain - this combination results in a unique terroir that the winegrowers of the „Roter Hang e.V.“ and which wine connoisseurs have come to appreciate. Here, the „queen of white wine grapes“, the Riesling vine, ideal growing conditions. Its roots can branch out up to 7 m deep into the red soil to absorb water and nutrients.
Primarily maturing in the Vineyards Rothenberg, Pettenthal, Hipping, Kranzberg, Ölberg, Heiligenbaum, Orbel and Schloss Schwabsburg Riesling vines, but other grape varieties have also become native here: Pinot Blanc, Blaufränkisch (Lemberger) and Sauvignon Blanc can also be found here.
Characterized by the different handwriting of the winegrowers, the mineral wines from the Rotliegende are conquering the wine world far beyond Rheinhessen, explains me proudly Jochen Schmitt, whose winery has been a member of the association since the very beginning. „Roter Hang e. V.“ is. As a winegrower on the Roter Hang and mayor of Nierstein, it is an honor for him to be able to cultivate a part of this special vineyard landscape, but also to accompany the further development of marketing with new ideas and to experience the development of tourism.
The special wine festival in the vineyard: the "wine presentation"
There are plenty of wine festivals in Rheinhessen, but the Wine presentation at the Red Slope, which takes place every year on the 2nd weekend in June, is something very special. Not for nothing was it recognized as a pioneer with the „Rheinhessen-AUSGEZEICHNET wine festival“ was awarded. The hike begins at the historic wine press on the Kranzberg and leads us past 5 pavilions along the Rotes Hang through the middle of the vineyards where the grapes ripen. Seating invites you to linger - we enjoy the view of the silvery Rhine at the foot of the slope, the sensational far-reaching view of the Hessian Ried extends as far as the Frankfurt skyline. The decelerated enjoyment of exquisite wines from member winegrowers „Roter Hang e.V.“ is a real treat at this location, accompanied by culinary delicacies along the way.
The creative names that adorn the labels of the fine wines are entertaining: „Last night a Riesling saved my life“, „Roter Schiefer“, „Love & Hope“, „I am Hipp“ - to name but a few.
Enjoyment, exchange and personal encounters are the focus of the 35th wine presentation on June 12 and 13, 2026 at the center of attention. In a relaxed atmosphere, wine lovers can talk to the winemakers and discover new facets of wine. With the „3er Flight“, three wines from different sites, wineries and vintages can be directly compared - an exciting opportunity to experience the diversity and special features of the wines even more intensively.
Under the motto "Riesling Lounge - Power on the mountain" guests at the 6th pavilion can look forward to an energetic evening high above Nierstein. Groovy beats, atmospheric lighting effects, soap bubbles and the view of the Roter Hang create a special atmosphere until sunset. Street food specialties, Rieslings from the Roter Hang as well as wine and grape juice spritzers ensure enjoyable moments. The younger generation in particular meet here to celebrate, dance and end the evening in a relaxed atmosphere - with good music, great wines and a unique view.

Special treasures on the Roter Hang
Everyone is talking about global warming, a serious issue of our time. Due to the increasingly mild climate here in the Rhine Valley, plants and animals are settling here that are known as „climate winners“. For example, the strictly protected orchid species Himantoglossum hircinum is now very common on the warm slopes here on the Rotliegend. Its corkscrew-like twisted lower lips adorn the rather foul-smelling orchid.
But some dyer's plants have also settled on the red soil: Dyer's woad (Isatis tinctoria), dyer's chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria) and common hound's tongue (Cynoglossum officinale) adorn the slopes in lush splendor.
The newcomer bee-eater (Merops apiaster) has also been discovered here. When it returns from its winter vacation in Africa, the colorful bird prefers the sun-drenched loess walls and mild climate here in Rheinhessen.
Say goodbye to the day in Rheinhessen - sundowner on the Roter Hang
Every day comes to an end, but with Riesling in your glass and the setting sun in your eyes in a very special way. This is how the „Sundowner on the Roter Hang“ has been established since last year and the relaxed farewell to a long day with a special drop in the glass has become a fixed date in the calendar. Every 2nd and 4th Thursday in May, July and August, winegrowers from the Roter Hang treat guests to their wines, a spritzer or grape juice; you are welcome to bring your own picnic blanket and snacks. The bar alternates between the Glöck, the Schwabsburger Schlossturm and the Niersteiner Wartturm - all locations offer fantastic views of the Rhine-Hessian landscape and the Rhine.
The Roter Hang offers a variety of highlights for wine lovers, cyclists, hikers and walkers, as well as for flora and fauna enthusiasts.
Now it's just a matter of discovering and enjoying them - have fun!
